Job Summary:

The College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Science invites applications for two 100% special faculty/lecturer positions in the English and Philosophy Department to begin mid-September 2026.

We are seeking a dynamic, student-centered instructor dedicated to fostering inclusive, engaging, and high-impact learning environments for an undergraduate student population comprised of all socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds. The position will begin September 16, 2026. This lecturer position is a full-time, one-year appointment, and eligible for renewal for successive annual appointments. This position requires candidates to be located in or willing to relocate to the greater Spokane-Cheney area.

The primary responsibility of this position is teaching foundational writing courses, helping first-year students develop the critical thinking, rhetorical, and academic writing skills necessary for their university journey and beyond. Depending on the candidate’s qualifications and department needs, teaching duties may extend to include English secondary education, introductory creative writing, introductory technical communication, and/or introduction to literature, depending on candidate’s qualifications and department needs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Teaching: Deliver a standard instructional load focused primarily on first-year composition and introductory writing courses.
  • Curriculum Design: Implement evidence-based writing pedagogy, aligning course outcomes with standards set by the university’s general education goals and the English Composition program, including following the curriculum set by the English Composition program.
  • Student Support: Hold regular office hours, provide timely and constructive feedback on student writing, and mentor students from all academic and cultural backgrounds.
  • Collaboration: Participate in composition program meetings, assessment initiatives, and professional development workshops within the English Composition program.

Priority will be given to candidates with experience teaching English Composition at the college level for 3+ years.

The typical workload for this position will involve teaching 45 credits per academic year, subject to department needs. The position also requires the faculty member to participate required trainings and program meetings. The candidate is not required to serve on committees unless this work is identified and approved as part of the workload by Department Chair and College Dean.

Additionally, all faculty are expected to actively participate in assessment of student learning and maintain health and safety protocols in assigned classrooms.

Conditions of Employment:

This Lecturer appointment for academic year 2026-2027 will have the option for renewal based on performance, funding availability and department need.

The required start date for this position is September 16, 2026. To be considered eligible for appointment into the position, applicants must be available and able to start in the position no later than mid-September 2026.

This position, during the course of university employment will be involved in the receipt of, or accountability for, university funds or other items of value, as well as the unsupervised access with the developmentally disabled, vulnerable adults or children under the age of 16. The offer of employment is contingent upon successful completion and passing of a background check prior to beginning employment.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in English, Rhetoric and Composition, Writing Studies, or a closely related field at the time of appointment.
  • Record of success teaching first-year composition or introductory writing at the college level.
  • Evidence of a strong commitment to student success and the ability to employ inclusive, culturally responsive teaching practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply a responsive and flexible approach that is supportive of the needs including universal access of our students, faculty, staff and the public

Preferred Qualifications:

Preference may be given to candidates who offer one or more of the following preferred qualifications:
  • Ph.D. in Rhetoric and Composition, or a closely related writing studies degree.
  • Experience utilizing CMS (Canvas), digital writing tools, multimodal composition, or teaching in online/hybrid environments.
  • Experience working with first-generation, multilingual, or historically underrepresented college students.
